Legionella occurs in building water systems where temperature, stagnation and biofilm together create favorable conditions. Its presence in a system is assessed through sampling designed around how that system actually operates.
Olympian Water Testing provides professional Legionella testing in domestic potable systems for building owners, boards, managing agents, engineers and institutional clients throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Temperature is recorded at every point of collection, because a Legionella result assessed without it cannot be interpreted properly.
Sampling locations follow the logic of the system: distal outlets furthest from the heat source, recirculation returns, storage vessels, low use fixtures and any location a temperature record identifies as favorable to growth.
A first draw reflects what is present in the line at rest, including material shed from biofilm. A post flush sample reflects what is moving through the system. The two answer different questions.
Which is collected is determined during consultation and stated in our reporting, so the result is interpreted against the condition it actually represents.
Our reporting identifies each sampling location, the temperature and conditions recorded there, the analytical approach applied and the result returned.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that detecting Legionella does not necessarily mean people will become ill, and that well managed buildings may still detect it. Results inform a water management program rather than standing alone.
Olympian Water Testing concentrates on domestic potable systems, which is why the sampling logic and the documentation are as detailed as they are.
Olympian Water Testing has operated since 1991 under NELAP accredited laboratory analysis, and enquiries are received at any hour of any day.
| Location | Why it is selected | Recorded at collection |
|---|---|---|
| Distal outlets | Furthest from the heat source, coolest supply | Temperature and time since last use |
| Recirculation return | Represents the loop as a whole | Temperature at the return |
| Storage vessels | Extended residence time | Temperature and access conditions |
| Low use fixtures | Standing water in rarely drawn lines | Occupancy pattern and rest period |
| Points flagged by temperature logs | Where records suggest a growth favorable range | The logged reading alongside the field reading |
Olympian provides professional on-site Legionella sampling for buildings and facilities throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
